The winery opened in June of 2002 with the sole purpose of producing Niagara’s finest wines. In the past several years we have continued our trend towards winemaking excellence and friendly, knowledgeable service.
Our estate property was purchased in 1995, we began planting in 1996 and our first grapes were ready to harvest in 1999. Our “mission” style building was designed by architect Lorne Haverty and was designed to commemorate the Congregation of Christian Sisters who once owned the property.
To date the total vineyard holdings include approximatly 100 acres. This acreage provides about 40% of our total grape needs. Grape varieties include:
Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Shiraz.
Our first vintage was in 2000 and we yielded a very small production of only 3 wines. In six short years our production has increased to 14,000 cases featuring 18 different wines.
Having to deal with various diverse weather conditions over the past few years, Angels Gate Winery never faulted in its commitment to producing only the finest VQA wines. Sometime that meant sacrificing quantity for quality. Truth be told, we would not do it any other way.
The winery took a new step in 2007 by enlisting the skills of Philip Dowell who was the chief winemaker at Inniskillin from 1998 until 2004. Well known and respected within the industry, Philip has already brought a new dimension and level of quality to our wines.
As always, we remain committed to producing quality VQA wines which are always devilishly good.
